A Southland mechanic yesterday admitted driving carelessly causing the death of a motorcyclist he crashed into after cutting a corner just outside Invercargill.

Gordon William Lumsden, 37, of Kamahi, admitted the charge before Judge Kevin Phillips in the Invercargill District Court. Police prosecutor Sergeant Rob Mills said Lumsden was driving a Toyota Hilux double-cab ute on State Highway 99 when he made a right turn towards Steel Rd into the path of motorcyclist Carl Hamish Bremer on January 18.

Mr Bremer died at the scene, Mr Mills said. Investigations revealed Lumsden had cut the corner by about 2.5m, he said.

Lumsden told police he had not seen the motorcycle until the last minute, Mr Mills said.

Judge Phillips remanded Lumsden on bail to June 1 for sentence.
