An Invercargill man's on-again, off-again relationship with his ex-partner is off again after he was sent to jail yesterday for breaching a protection order for the 10th time.

Garth Raymond Sutherland, 36, appeared before Judge Kevin Phillips in the Invercargill District Court for sentence on two breaches of the order on January 11.

He was sentenced to 11 months' jail.

Judge Phillips said Sutherland went to his victim's address and knocked on the door. When she didn't answer, he made verbal threats. Later the same day he called her phone and left messages saying "you won't have any feeling for anyone, because you won't be around anymore".

Sutherland had claimed he was threatening her new partner, but that was also covered by the protection order, Judge Phillips said.

Sutherland had been through nine stopping violence programmes but continued to offend in a violent way.

Sutherland told the judge: "I just keep going back, Your Honour. I don't know know why, but I do. But I won't this time."
