A man who kicked and punched a woman was sent to jail last week when he appeared in Invercargill District Court.

Troy William Fowler, 35, appeared before Judge Kevin Phillips for injuring with intent to injure on October 9.

He was sentenced to one year and 10 months' jail.

Judge Phillips said Fowler was on home detention at the time the offending occurred. He was intoxicated and, after noticing the woman was texting someone, he struck her twice to the right ear with a closed fist, he said.

He kicked her about the arms before pushing her out the front door, he said.

Judge Phillips said Fowler had an atrocious history in relation to matters of violence.
