The jury trial for a man accused of hitting two people with a hammer will continue in the Invercargill District Court today.
John Daniel Hepburn, 28, is on trial before Judge Christopher Field after pleading not guilty to two charges of injuring with intent to cause grievous bodily harm in Lumsden on August 10 last year.
In his opening address on Monday, Crown prosecutor Riki Donnelly said Hepburn hit a man on the back of the head with a hammer before kicking and hitting him while he was on the ground.
When another man rushed to his aid, Hepburn also hit him around the face with the hammer, Mr Donnelly said.
Defence lawyer Sonia Vidal said her client had said there was an incident at the house between him and the complainants but he did not use the hammer; it was used by another person, she said.
The trial is expected to finish today.
