A contractor who stole from rural Southland businesses said he sold items to a scrap-metal dealer to help his family.
Jason Trevor Brown, 43, contractor, appeared before Judge David Holderness in Invercargill District Court on theft and burglary charges.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Glen McMurdo said Brown took batteries and steel valued at $2718.75 from Pypers Produce on August 3, and copper cable and steel valued at $6000 from Stuart Timber, Tapanui, on September 19. Brown also burgled AB Lime, in Winton, between January 1 and September 18, Ballance Agri Nutrients between February 1 and April 26, and McGregor's Concrete, Winton, on September 10.
The court was told that Brown had worked at all the businesses before stealing from them.
Mr McMurdo said Brown said he took batteries and steel and sold them to a scrap-metal dealer to get money for his family.
Brown was remanded until November 19 for sentence.
