A youth jointly charged with an abduction in Dunedin on Saturday was granted bail in the Dunedin District Court this morning.
Zane McVeigh of Kaiapoi, 17, has been bailed to his mother and stepfather's home in Otaki, near Wellington, until he is to reappear in the Dunedin court on November 14.
McVeigh entered no plea. The Crown had opposed bail on the grounds that McVeigh was at risk of absconding.
However, after assurances from McVeigh's mother and stepfather, who were in court, Judge Fred McElrea allowed bail with conditions that include a 24-hour curfew.
McVeigh and co-accused Jason Lepper, 36, of Motueka, are charged with abducting a 22-year-old woman in Vogel St about 9.30 on Saturday night with the intent of having sexual intercourse with her.
Lepper is in custody and is scheduled to reappear in the court on November 12.
