A bank branch on the Canterbury University campus in the Christchurch suburb of Ilam was robbed this afternoon.

The male robber entered the ANZ Bank in the University of Canterbury Students' Association building about 2.45pm and told two female tellers he had a firearm, police said.

He left with an undisclosed sum of cash, and fled on foot towards a nearby carpark.

Police believed he may have left the scene in a red Toyota hatchback.

He was described as Maori or Polynesian and wearing a black baseball cap, dark coloured hooded top and dark jeans with a green and black backpack.

Anyone who witnessed the robbery should contact Christchurch South police.
