Police are hunting a gunman who robbed a South Auckland petrol station early today.

A police spokeswoman said the man, armed with a sawn-off shotgun, approached the lone attendant at the night service window, at Shell on Wiri Station Rd, about 2.30am.

The man demanded cash and cigarettes which he was given before fleeing the scene.

A police dog unsuccessfully tried to track the offender.

It is not known if he got into a waiting car or ran from the scene.

Police want to hear from anyone with information about the aggravated robbery.
