A dairy farmer killed in a crash in Southland was about to become a father.
Stefan Petrus Zeestraten, 24, died when his four-wheel-drive Toyota Land Cruiser left the road and hit a power pole north of Winton about 3am on Tuesday.
Zeestraten, of Centre Bush, was a former Christ's College student and studied at Lincoln University.
Police said yesterday they were still investigating the cause of the crash.
Zeestraten's Invercargill-based family were too distraught to talk.
But his death notice said he was "a passionate loving family man" and a respected leader.
He was "taken too soon", the notice said.
Zeestraten is survived by his partner, Gemma Nicholson, who is pregnant with the couple's daughter.
The crash was in Limehills-Browns Rd, in western Southland.
"It appears the vehicle had crossed on to the wrong side of the road and impacted on a concrete power pole before coming to rest in the ditch," police said.
Zeestraten, an Otapiri dairy farmer, was found dead.
Police said their investigation would consider whether speed and alcohol were factors in the crash.
