OPINION: I am normally a fan of Mayor Tim but his stance against the local body reforms shows he is not in touch with his constituents (November 7).

One of the major reasons for the reforms were that they were to enable the councillors to retake control of council finances, which had been practically hijacked by city managers and their staff who had a financial incentive to continually increase staffing and none to reduce costs.

Mayor Tim must realise how much angst there is in the community over the continual high rate increases and that he and his councillors are expected to, and now have the ability to, bring these back to an amount that is no more than the inflation rate.

Failing to do this will signal to the ratepayers of Invercargill that they need to go and be replaced by people with more empathy to the wishes of those footing the bills.
