Today's letter: Maiming of ducks

OPINION: Southland Fish and Game is calling for submissions on the use of lead shot for all "sub-gauge" shotguns (see The Southland Times, November 3).

Now is the time for duck hunters to be counted.

If you believe, as I do, that steel shot maims more ducks (which ultimately die) than ingestion of lead pellets has ever done then send a submission to Southland Fish and Game stating your views.

If we as hunters chose to sit back and let someone else do the work then this council (which is supposed to be representing licence holders) will vote this proposal in.

We would then become the only province in New Zealand who could not make a democratic choice for ourselves on what gauge shotgun to use for duck hunting.

Please act now as submissions close off on November 23.
