Patriotic machineryJILLIAN ALLISON-AITKEN
No doubt you've all seen the video of a washing machine playing the national anthem by now, and if you happen to be the proud owner of a Fisher & Paykel washing machine, I'm sure you've taken your mechanical beastie for a test drive to see if it plays God Defend New Zealand.
According to the good folk at Fisher & Paykel, their washing machines have been capable of playing the wee ditty for 20 years or so, with others programmed to play the United States and Australian anthems (depending on where they were sold, of course). It's all for demonstration purposes, apparently.
I was quite taken by the fact my washing machine plays a little tune at the end of a wash cycle to let you know it's all done and dusted but it's nothing recognisable so I'm now feeling a little cheated.
And it's not just washing machines showing their patriotism: there's also a Renault Formula 1 car that plays God Save the Queen.
