OPINION: Mr Alan Dennis' election slogan of providing the link between the ILT and ICC sounds great but sadly seems to ring a bit hollow when you see opportunities missed by both parties.
The rebuild of the Waikiwi Tavern could have been a great chance to kickstart some life back into the Waikiwi shopping centre and at the same time have a neighbourhood tavern far more accessible to a lot more residents.
In this case it seems both the ILT and the council have failed to use the opportunity to at least consult and more importantly look at options that are good for the community.
The present proposal means demolishing a large industrial building and rebuilding away from any other community-used area. It is across a busy road for pedestrians and will mean most will drive to it.
At the Waikiwi shopping area there is a large vacant site, a crossing controlled by lights, several homes that cater for older residents and it could become the heart of a busy suburb.
The tavern would complement the centre and we would see the life return for the benefit of all the parties including the ILT. How good would it be to make such an asset easily available to this large group of elderly residents who have made such a good contribution to our city?
So while the so-called link sounds great, Mr Dennis, it would be great to see some vision.
