OPINION: ''Well done and congratulations'' on the Southern Scenic Route celebrations - but the route does stuff-all for the town of Gore.

It has successfully diverted tourist traffic from passing through this town.

Having travelled regularly from Gore to Invercargill every other week for the past 30 years, I've seen a dramatic drop in tourist travel movement such as campervans, bicycle and motorcycle tourists, as well as hitchhikers.

Now that the scenic route is well established an added blow has been the Mataura-Clinton highway, which carries much traffic that may otherwise have used State Highway 1 through Gore.

What can be done abut this?

As I previously stated, stuff-all.
