OPINION: Southland District Mayor Gary Tong does not believe the expense of transfer stations was putting people off from dumping their waste safely (February 19).

I think that cost could be a reason for some people dumping their rubbish throughout Southland instead of taking it to the tip.

Dropping off waste to the landfill is a good thing to do. Why charge people for it?

Make it free of charge and we may find less rubbish in the district.

I know that less money will be collected by the council that way, but on the other hand money may be saved as well since, as your story said, it could cost more than $1000 to clean up each dumping.
