About 70 ecstatic youngsters took to the field on Tuesday afternoon to mingle with the Highlanders and learn tricks from the best.

Locations Realty, a major sponsor of the Highlanders, arranged the skill session for all junior rugby players in the Wakatipu area.

Queenstown Locations Realty business development manager Steve Lindsay said the session taught the young players skills, and provided them with inspiration.

It also encouraged them to chase their dreams so that one day they could be putting on the blue or black jersey, he said.

The weather had an impact on numbers but he was pleased with the turnout.

"We're happy and the kids are happy.''

The Highlanders had a bye this week but instead of taking some ``R and R'' they had come here to help out.

"They wanted to come back into our community and give something back to us as a sponsor,'' Mr Lindsay said.

The session, held at the Queenstown Recreation Ground, started with a sausage sizzle and the children mixed with the players and also received a goodie bag and Highlanders flag.
