The charity bike ride, from Frankton to Invercargill, on Friday holds special significance for entrant David Langman, of Invercargill.

He signed up for the ride on April 4. The night before, his wife Andrea died in Dunedin Hospital.

The bike ride is part of the Westpac Trust Chopper Appeal.

During the week Langman spent by his wife's bedside in hospital, he noticed rescue helicopters landing and taking off. Back in Invercargill, Langman heard about the chopper appeal. He met with organiser Andrew Moreton, of Westpac, and entered.

"I'm looking forward to it. It's something Andrea would encourage," Langman said.
