A late penalty by fullback Caleb Young helped Wyndham's Menzies College to a 16-15 win over St Kevins College, Oamaru, in round one of the Highlanders First XV competition on Saturday.

Southland Boys' High School and Gore High School were other Southland schools to win.

Southland Boys' beat Mt Aspiring College 36-5 in Wanaka and Gore High School won the battle of the Gore schools, beating across-town rivals St Peter's College 22-13.

Centre Loni Fisiihoi scored three tries for Waitaki Boys' High but their opponents, James Hargest College, were not disgraced by the 36-15 scoreline.

Central Southland College were a late callup to the Highlanders competition this season and had to begin against one of its traditionally strong teams, Kings' High from Dunedin, going down 67-0 at Winton.

Defending champions Otago Boys' High School confirmed their standing with 10 tries in their 66-3 win over John McGlashan.

South Otago High School created some history by beating Dunstan High School for the first time - 30-5 - with centre Matt Whaanga scoring two tries.
