Strang, Robbie win Otago rally
The Wallacetown combination of Carter Strang and Stewart Robbie were last night celebrating their success at the Rally of Otago.
Driver Strang and co-driver Robbie won the all-comers' class with Strang's Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 6. The pair improved on their third from last year.
The rally took in gravel roads in Waihola, Lawrence and on the outskirts of Dunedin.
Strang and Robbie had a two-minute lead at the end of racing on Saturday, but struck problems three stages from the finish yesterday.
"On one of the corners we lost traction and slid off into a ditch," Strang said last night.
"We managed to get back on the road ... the suspension got a little bit of damage."
They lost most of their two-minute lead but held on to take honours. Runners up Robert McCallum and Peter Kennard were threatening the Southlanders until rolling their Ford Escort five corners from the finish.
Strang said yesterday's win was the best of his rally driving career.
"We're pretty happy."
