Neal has youth on her side
Southland table tennis player Shelley Neal is the youngest player at this week's 2014 World Veteran Table Tennis Championships in Auckland.
Of the 1662 registered players from more than 60 countries competing in Auckland this week, Neal and Alvin Kang Wong from Malaysia are officially the youngest competitors.
They were born on the same day, December 5, 1974, and are competing in the 40-49 age group at the championships (the championship rules state that players who turn 40 during the year of the tournament are eligible).
Harry Taylor, from Christchurch, is the oldest player at the age of 90.
Other Southlanders competing in the various age groups are Debbie Garrett and Richard Cavanagh (40-49), Patricia Swale, Ngaire Garrett and Ron Garrett (70-75) and Clive Adamson (75-80).
The championships run until tomorrow.
