Veteran Ricky Gutsell comes back for more
Gore Half Marathon organisers are hoping for about 300 competitors tomorrow.
It is the 27th edition and part of the Southland Half Marathon Championship. As well as the half marathon, two events will be held for walkers or runners over 12km and 6km. All races start in Main St at 10.30am.
Organiser Graham Hall said competitors included some of the south's best runners.
Aaron Wright, of Gore, holds the half marathon record of 1hr 10min 41sec (21.1km), posted 20 years ago.
Helen Boyd set the women's record of 1:22.39 21 years ago when running for Dunedin's Hill City Athletics Club.
Wright has run the half marathon three times and won it twice. The last time he contested it was in the 1990s.
He is thinking about entering next year, providing his form is good in leadup events.
"If I do, I'll want to do it well," said Wright, who is amazed his record still stands. It's not that flash a time, I'm surprised it's lasted this long."
Wright is competing in the Christchurch Marathon next month.
Ricky Gutsell is lining up tomorrow after winning the men's 50-59 age group last year. He has run in at least 15 Gore half marathons.
The knee injury that troubled him through the summer is not 100 per cent healed yet.
Gutsell trains 110km most weeks but in the countdown to important races, he increases it to 160km.
During lunch breaks at the Mataura meat plant, where he is personnel manager, Gutsell runs 9km.
