Savory: Harsh to turn back on coach Henare
To support or not to support?
OPINION: Over a coffee on Tuesday, Southland Sharks coach Paul Henare talked me through what had been a nightmare couple of days.
He was a man clearly devastated.
Before I went for that coffee I had wondered how many people would show up to support the Sharks on Sunday night against Taranaki, given what has unfolded off the court.
However, after that meeting it dawned on me there is at least one reason why Southlanders shouldn't turn their back on this team - Henare himself.
He had a job for life with Hawke's Bay, a position he held in 2011 and 2012.
That was the easy option for him.
Instead, he took on the challenge to move south with the dream of turning the relative newbies to the competition into a championship-winning team.
In less than 12 months as Sharks coach he did just that - and, believe me, much of that title can be put down to the appointment of Henare.
People have the right to make up their own minds about the Sharks on Sunday night - but my feeling is it would be harsh for Southlanders to turn their back on Henare after what he has done for the province.
The fact he is contemplating coming out of retirement to help his under-fire team highlights what he is prepared to do to make things right.
