New Zealand Sevens coach Gordon Tietjens has withdrawn as guest speaker from tomorrow night's Southland Sports Awards after making an off-colour joke at a similar event in Dunedin.

Tietjens reportedly shocked some guests with a joke about removing a women's bra, with or without her consent, at the Otago Sports Awards last Friday.

He apologised for the clanger in a statement this week.

''It was a joke, in hindsight, which I should never have used and I am deeply sorry,'' the statement said.

Sport Southland had been happy to continue with Tietjens as their guest speaker for the sold-out awards night but he withdrew today and has been replaced by former All Black Justin Marshall.

Sport Southland chief executive Brendon McDermott said he was pleased Marshall had been able to accept the invitation at short notice.

''Whilst we are disappointed Sir Gordon Tietjens opted not to speak at the awards, we are delighted to secure Justin as a guest speaker at the last minute," he said.

"As a Southlander and a sportsperson who has competed at the very highest level, we have no doubt he will have some great stories to share.''
