Southland amateur boxers Faliu Mauu, Pania Wehi and Johannes Te Kooro have been selected to represent the South Island at the New Zealand Golden Gloves championships in Christchurch.

The trio were part of a good contingent of Southland boxers who made the trip to Timaru at the weekend for the South Island Golden Gloves.

Frustratingly, Mauu in the elite female 69kg open division wasn't able to get a fight and won her division unopposed.

This was also the case for Te Kooro in the youth male 91kg open.

It was a frustrating trip all round for Tui-Marie Sonter's gym, with four of the five fighters winning their divisions unopposed.

Wehi was the only boxer from Tui's Gym to get a fight and she lost to Bridgette Sefton in the elite female 81kg open division.

Aroha Solomon, from the BT Gym, was the sole victor, beating Alana Pearce by unanimous decision in the elite female 75kg novice grade.

Meanwhile, the Southland boxing championships are to be held on July 20.
