Under-17 basketballers tournament ready

Southland has teams competing in the New Zealand under-17 boys and girls basketball tournaments in Auckland.

Starting today, 20 teams will compete in the boys' tournament and 17 teams in the girls' event.

Southland Basketball Association general manager Jill Bolger said the Southland players had been working hard and hoped for some good performances.

"Both of these teams have had an excellent buildup to this tournament, aided by morning training sessions with Kevin Braswell and good results at zonal tournaments held earlier in the year," Bolger said.

The Southland boys team qualified second in their zone, behind Otago, while the girls proved their supremacy in the zone, easily accounting for every team they have played against this year.

As well as trying to help Southland teams to wins, the players will also attempt to catch the eye of selectors for national sides.

The Southland boys team will play North Harbour at 9am today before playing Canterbury in their second game at 2.15pm.

The Southland girls team will open their tournament today against Tasman at 12.30pm, then against Wellington at 7.30pm.
