Third time was the charm last weekend for St Mary's A netball team as they brushed aside Rata A 43-27 in the new and last round of the Invercargill Netball Centre's Premier A division.

Rata Red will have time to lick its wounds and a chance to cure what ails them when they take on the Southland Girls' High B team today as play continues for premier teams.

Bluff A had their second win of the season against an under-the-weather, and injury-hampered, Northern Tavern St Mary's All Stars last weekend.

The high score of 60-53 and one more win from this round will put Bluff in good stead.

Should the team be able to take a further scalp, say that of Southland Girls' High Senior A, a semifinal could be theirs for the taking.

Southland Girls' High could have their mind on other matters with school holidays, age-group tournaments and coach Natalie Avellino heading to Australia for the school break.

The St Mary's All Stars will face off against their St Mary's A-team clubmates without the services of Avellino, but founding All Stars Angee Shand and Jo Ward return to steady the ship.

The last time the two teams met was the second game of the first round when the teams drew.

After a promising start to the season, premier B team Verdon Senior A faces continued absence of key players and that was witnessed in its 44-56 loss to the Otatara Stars last weekend.

On the back of the number of tournaments during school holidays, this weekend's Premier B division game

between Verdon Senior A and Girls High 10A has been rescheduled to next Saturday.

Girls' High Year 10A team excelled their first game after gaining promotion to premier B division, beating

Northern Tavern St Mary's B 58-43.

The youngsters will have to wait until they return from various tournaments and school holidays to continue their winning ways.

Rata Stubbies continue to thwart attacking teams with their defence, though the 37-22 score line against Collegiate Gold says little for the quality of their hour-long clash.

At the end of round one in the top secondary school grade, Hargest 9A had a huge 36-11 win over Southland Girls High Diamonds.

However, Southland Girls' High's Year 9B team sits top of the table by one point (19) from its Year 8A team and the Hargest team on 18 points.

Verdon 8A sits top of the Year 7/8 Grade 1 by six points.
