Fiordland Classic seen as one of the best

Fiordland Classic: Organisers of the weekend's Fiordland Classic are still on a high after one of the most successful tournaments yet.

A full field of 114 teams lined up for the popular annual tournament, sponsored by Peppers Retreats and Resorts and hosted by the Te Anau Golf Club, and were met with perfect conditions.

First prize went to the Heriot pairing of Paul Slack and Julian Kelly, who have played the tournament a number of years and who also won the tournament in 2012.

A good mix of new and more experienced golfers lined up over the weekend are paying full credit to Te Anau club members, who worked hard to ensure the weekend was a success.

Fescue Cup: Southland's oldest golf tournament, the Fescue Cup, tees off on Sunday with a full field and high expectations of a great weekend.

The tournament is Mossburn Golf Club's only one of the year and Andrew Pardoe-Burnett has been thrilled with the positive response to it again this year.

The field was full two weeks ago, which he puts down to a number of factors including the good country course, the challenge, the good mix of ages and ability of golfers, and the positive atmosphere at the club.

Players from 18 different clubs will line up for the tournament on Sunday, which tees off at 11.30am.

Home Links: Southland ladies put in a good showing after the results from the Women's Home Links events were collated from regions nationwide.

More than 18,700 ladies played across the country at various Home Links events.

Robyn Boniface (Queens Park) finished second in the Best Gross Cup, Fay Thompson (Winton) was sixth in the Veteran's Cup and the Winton pairing of Vanessa Clark and Marleen Muir placed sixth in the Nancy MacCormick Memorial Foursomes.

An outstanding effort, particularly considering the number of players in the competition nationwide.

NZ Golf: New Zealand Golf will be holding a national roadshow in August, which will include LOVE Golf and Casual Golf information sessions.

The Invercargill roadshow is set for August 21, at Queens Park Golf Club from 5pm to 7.30pm and representatives from all Southland clubs are encouraged to attend.

The sessions will be structured with a NZ Golf presentation, question and answer time and demonstrations on the LOVE Golf tool-kit, DotGolfLive and LOVE Golf, the LOVE Golf website, the Casual Golf registration process and social media.

New Zealand Golf is committed to spending more time in front of Districts and golf clubs, so if you are interested in attending or would like more information please contact Golf Southland -

MLT President's Pennants: The second round of the MLT President's Pennants competition will be played at Queens Park on Saturday.

Invercargill A, Greenacres, Gore and Invercargill B all notched up first round wins and will be looking to back that up on Saturday.
