Treat for all golfers as popular tournament revived
Golf Southland is confident the revival of a once-popular tournament will prove a hit with golfers of all abilities, when the Southland Men's and Women's Foursomes tournament tees off on August 31.
With the help of a couple of Southland's top representative players - Karl and Kerry Mariu - Golf Southland is preparing to revitalise the tournament, opening it to all golfers Southland-wide.
The Marius, who play for the Southland men's and women's team respectively, and own Monarch Motel in Invercargill, have stepped in as key sponsors and the tournament will tee off on Sunday August 31 at Queens Park Golf Club.
The Southland men's foursomes has not been played for the past 15 years and the last time the women's tournament was contested was 2006.
Golf Southland chairwoman Robyn Boniface said the board felt it was the right time to bring it back.
"I suppose old timers, like me, don't like to see trophies sitting there not being played for. They were given in good faith and it's up to us to make sure we're providing opportunities for golfers to play for them," she said.
"In saying that, while there are trophies up for grabs, there are also multiple nett prizes, and we've structured it to suit all abilities with morning (foursomes, 50 per cent combined handicap) and afternoon (Canadian foursomes, 40 per cent combined handicap) rounds.
We are hoping to get a really good response from golfers of all levels."
"We're trying to bring that fun factor back and create some enthusiasm and we have been very lucky to secure Monarch Motel as sponsor, which allows for a good prize list."
Kerry Mariu said she and Karl had been happy to step up and support the revival of the tournament.
"It will be great to have a tournament like this that the club golfer can play," she said. "For us, we just wanted to give back and we were happy to sponsor it."
Whether the sponsors themselves would be lining up in the tournament was yet to be decided, with the pair busy at work. However, Kerry hoped at least one of them would be teeing off.
Entries for the foursomes are open to teams of two (there is no mixed section), and can be made to Golf Southland by Wednesday August 27.
