Next week is the annual New Zealand secondary schools winter tournament week.

Thirteen Southland secondary schools have teams and individuals involved in events around the country during the week.

Fifty-two Southland secondary school teams will travel to various destinations to play in national and South Island tournaments.

The week will start with the South Island netball tournament at Stadium Southland from Monday to Thursday. Twelve Southland teams will be taking part.

Games will be played from 9am to 5pm on Monday to Thursday with the B and C-grade finals at 3pm on Thursday and the A-grade final at 4pm.

Local teams expected to perform well are Southland Girls' High School, Wakatipu High School in A-grade and Aparima College in B-grade.

The other South Island event being hosted in Southland is the South Island mixed hockey in Gore with four local teams competing.

As part of the Southland regional events calendar the Southland Squash Championships will take place on the Friday of tournament week .

This is the first time the secondary schools event will be back in the stadium after three years.

Entries are looking good with Southland Boys likely to dominate with some nationally ranked players.

Other events that have attracted good representation from Southland schools will be the under-15 boys co-ed rugby tournament in Queenstown where seven Southland schools will feature.

Ten Southland school hockey teams will be play in four different hockey tournaments around New Zealand during the week.

Other school sports teams will be attending SI Satellite football tournaments, rugby tournaments, NZ Basketball zone tournaments, South Island ice hockey, New Zealand golf , New Zealand badminton and New Zealand indoor bowls.
