After 50 years of trying, a gutsy Southland rugby team won the Ranfurly Shield at AMI Stadium in Christchurch, beating Canterbury 9-3 in a dour but exhilarating match for the Stags' passionate fans.

Despite being well behind Canterbury in all the match statistics, the Stags' fanatical defence proved the difference between the two teams, ensuring New Zealand rugby's most prestigious domestic trophy will spend the summer in Rugby Southalnd's trophy cabinet in Invercargill.

Score: Southland 9 (Robbie Robinson 3 pen), Canterbury 3 (Stephen Brett dg) . HT: 3-all.

randomly the post b4 is from my old man.. im currently in manchester uk (looking 4 a job if any1 knows of 1 :) i seen the news via a facebook post from an old school friend joanne nix of drummond.. and i couldnt believe it.. i was stoked.. im sure the neighbours thought they were living next to a torretz sufferer after my rather large liberal use of the f word!! u f'n beuty etc etc.. i was at the game in 1995 when we played canterbury for the shield and lost by 7 points in a seesaw game which could of gone either way... but im now totally stoked that we have pulled it off.. its great to see the pics of the boys with the shield... shame im not there to see it in person... as im sure the frog n furkin is furkin going off tonight!! bloody good work southland stags long may it continue...

I was born in Invercargill in 1956 and now living in Brisbane, Australia but can not be any more proud to be a Southlander then now.

2010, Bring it on, Southland is now the team to be recognised as true Champions, but hey Southlanders always have been.

Alan Henderson, I was also there in 1959 and, yes, that bloody Albert Prior probably won the shield for Auckland! I am in Perth Australia and my sister called me from Dunedin the moment Southland won. I have to tell you the neighbors can still hear my shout of triumph!! They may be the Stags to many, but to me Southland rugby is what I grew up with!!!!

I've followed the Stags since the best night on the Lions tour.....somehow I now own four jersies. Watched this in Dubai (seriously) before calling my Cantabrian wife and her Southland exile family. It's made me more happy than I ever thought possible.....congratulations to the team and the patient Southlanders!
