Southland's 2009-10 Hawke Cup campaign has received a major boost with Otago Volts bowler Craig Smith recruited to the region.
Southland were set to open their season against South Canterbury today, which would have been Smith's debut in maroon.
However, with the Queens Park cricket ground in Invercargill water-logged, the game has now been rescheduled. Smith will provide Southland with an ideal replacement for regular frontline bowler Nic Turner, who is now playing for Auckland in the Plunket Shield competition.
The 24-year-old is a member of the Otago Volts squad and has played nine four-day first-class games and 10 one-day fixtures for Otago since 2005.
Southland's new recruit has also previously played for the New Zealand under-19 team.
He will join Southland for their first fixture against Mid Canterbury next month but he won't move to Invercargill permanently until early next year.
Smith will teach at Southland Boys' High School next year.
