Emerging youngsters revved up by shootout

Southland's top young rally drivers have been unsuccessful in their bid to win a $50,000 scholarship from Rally New Zealand but the experience was worth the trip, they say.
Drivers David Holder, 20, Phil Terry, 23, and Kevin Laird, 24, were among nine drivers chosen for the shootout at Maramarua Forest near Auckland last weekend, with the added chance to race a professionally prepared Ford Fiesta ST.
Mr Holder said the guys were tested on their driving ability, fitness, mental strength, and media skills, and although the trio were unsuccessful in winning the scholarship, they had made great contacts through the experience.
"I learnt that what I need now is just more time behind the wheel so I am looking forward to getting my car ready and doing a lot of racing next year," he said.
The rally season starts again in February.
