Daniel Pinn and Kris Lambie's late-inning heroics proved in vain in Southland one-day club cricket on Saturday as Marist clung on to win an epic nailbiter by two runs.

Chasing 195 for victory, Central Western were in all sorts of bother at 110 for eight, after collapsing from a good start at 54 for one.

Tailenders Michael Anderson and Daniel Pinn – in his first game for the Central Western club in seven years – added 20 runs for the ninth wicket before Anderson was caught off Kent Donaldson's bowling.

Needing another 64 runs for victory with the last pair at the wicket, Central Western faced a task of enormous proportions, but what unfolded was nearly one of the greatest escapes in history.

Pinn and No11 batsmen Kris Lambie combined for a magnificent 61-run stand and had the win in their sights until Pinn's outstanding innings of 46 ended when he was bowled by Donaldson, leaving Central Western an agonising two runs short.

Earlier in the day, Donaldson produced an excellent 83 at the top of the order for Marist, with Jono Ross also chiming in with 34 to get them up to 193 all out.

At Hamilton Park in Gore, Al Junaid hit a wonderful 122 to help propel Invercargill-Old Boys to 262 to seven from their 50, batting first against Albion. Andrew Mackway-Jones continued his solid season with 43, while Michael Anderson-Stewart looked in good touch too, finishing unbeaten on 41.

Michael Grattan and Chris Burrows got Albion off to a strong start adding 69 for the first wicket, but once they departed Albion all of a sudden fell to 99 for five. The Gore-based side never really recovered from that and, despite useful knocks from Craig Marshall and Matt Ferguson, they were eventually rolled for 183 – 79 runs short. Michael Anderson-Stewart capped off a great day for himself, taking three for 27 from 8.3 overs.

Clinton Goad was the star of the show in the final game of the round at Tiger Park as the top-order batsman smashed 15 fours and two sixes in an unbeaten 115 to steer Appleby to a seven-wicket win over Metro.

Appleby also had valuable contributions from Andrew Leckie with 35 and Callum Johnstone, 32 not out, as the visitors got home comfortably with more than 11 overs to spare.

Metro probably fell 40 runs short of a competitive total earlier in the day, with the Tigers rolled for 219 batting first. Mark Beer struck a brilliant captain's knock of 87 for the Tigers, holding the middle order together nicely. Beer and rising talent Hamish Cooke, who made 65, combined for an effective 99-run sixth-wicket partnership. Metro could have done with more innings of substance, though, with only two other batsmen managing double figures.
