ILT Dodgers Dynamos went into the women's softball final against Odd Sox Masters full of confidence at Surrey Park yesterday, as their final placing in the round-robin competition games gave them an advantage of two lives.
Should they have lost the first game in the final, then the extra life game would have given them another chance.
As it turned out, Odd Sox Masters made sure that extra life was needed, downing Dodgers 14 runs to 10.
The win was well earned by Odd Sox, who outbatted Dodgers 21 hits to 12.
Jaynee Hetaraka led the way with the bat with four hits and some fine fielding in a strong wind at left field. Jan Stratton, Pam Waitaiki and Tina Waitaiki (4) also had a good game with the bat.
Dodgers came within two runs in the fourth innings, but that was as close as they got.
Jan Ormsby was strong with three hits and four runs batted in. Sandra Chalmers, Nicola Leonard and Kris Pearson (2) tried their best to pull back the runs, but it was too little too late.
Being forced into another game, Dodgers regrouped and came out determined to put the first game behind them.
This time they won the batting duel 17 to 11, and later took the game and title 14-12.
Young Emma Glover had a good game with three hits, one of them a home run.
Nicola Leonard seemed to be more settled on the pitching mound, restricting the rampant Odd Sox batters from the first game and belting a home run and a three-base hit.
For Dodgers, Memory Gage, Ari Duthie and Glover (3) Leonard and Megan Pearson (2) scored.
Odd Sox batters were Teresa Wilson, Stratton, Sandra Robertson and Yvonne Couper (2) and Jaynee Hetaraka hit a home run.
Dodgers will be presented with the women's winning trophy on Saturday, March 27, when the men's finals will be played, with the runners-up trophy going to a hard-working Odd Sox.
