Next week is summer tournament week and will be one of the busiest weeks event-wise for the year.

On Monday the Southland squash championships will be played at Stadium Southland. This has been a popular event in the past. Last year 15 teams took part and we are hoping for a similar number this year.

On Tuesday the Southland golf championships will be played out at Winton. This will also feature many of Southland's top junior golfers.

The winners will qualify for the New Zealand golf championships in Dunedin in August.

On Wednesday we will host, with Cycling Southland, the Southland and South Island cycling championships at the velodrome.

There should be more competition for the Southland cyclists, with several Canterbury and Otago cyclists travelling down to compete this year.

A strong contingent of cyclists will be representing Dunstan High School.

On Friday the Southland triathlon championships will be held at Central Southland College in Winton.

The date of this event has been changed to the Friday to avoid a clash with this year's Gold Rush, which has become a popular event for Southland schools.

South Island and national events that some of the Southland schools will be competing at during the weekend before tournament week and through tournament week are this weekend's South Island water polo competition in Christchurch, NZ Rowing's Maadi Cup competition from March 22-27, the South Island Sunburst Regatta in Dunedin from March 22-26, New Zealand triathlon on March 25 at Lake Karapiro, South Island division two softball in Dunedin from March 25-28, and South Island touch on March 27-28 in Christchurch.
