A massive week is in store for the Southland Boys' High School first XI as their 2009-10 cricket season heats up.
Today they will finish their two-day interschool game against Otago Boys' High School at Queens Park in Invercargill.
Tomorrow the focus will switch to Gore, where they travel to take on Gore High School in the final of the Southland Gillette Cup knockout competition.
The school team will then have a two-day breather before it is back into it on Saturday playing Marist in the Southland senior one-day cricket competition final.
If the Invercargill school side gets past the hurdle of Gore High School tomorrow it will also book a date with a Dunedin school on Sunday in another Gillette Cup round.
Win that and there will be yet another showdown with another Dunedin school in the Otago-Southland final on Monday.
For Southland Boys' the 2009-10 season has already been a good one as they've beaten Christchurch school Shirley Boys' High School in an interschool and become just the second school team to progress to the Southland senior one-day final.
However, how far they can progress in the nationwide Gillette Cup schools tournament is likely to determine how highly the season rates.
Last season the Invercargill school was beaten by Gore High in the Southland Gillette Cup final and it is a scenario the usual powerhouse Southland cricket school will be hoping not to repeat when the two teams meet tomorrow.
They were originally scheduled to play each other in Gore on Friday but wet weather forced the fixture to be postponed.
Southland Boys' had a patchy day's play yesterday when they started their two-day interschool against Otago Boys' High School at Queens Park.
They managed to roll through Otago Boys' high to have them all out for 202, with Stuart Kruger taking five wickets.
However, in Southland Boys' first innings they were dismissed for only 90, which meant they were required to follow on.
Jonty Brown and Henry Burns got their team through to 61 for none at stumps, meaning Otago Boys' lead is now only 50.
INTERSCHOOL CRICKET
Otago Boys' High School (first innings) 202 all out (K Patterson 56, M Collins 50; S Kruger five for 52), Southland Boys' High School (first innings) 91 all out (M van Schaik 37; S Blakely two for 11, C Croudis two for five) SBHS (second innings) 61 for none (H Burns 38 not out, J Brown 20 not out).
