Natalie Wiegersma keeps inching towards her Commonwealth Games goal as the Southland swimmer returned to Invercargill yesterday with four titles from the Auckland championships.

Wiegersma won the 100m butterfly, 50m butterfly, 400m individual medley and 50m breaststroke at the championships, held during the weekend.

When doing that she also broke her own Southland record in the 50m breaststroke.

Southland coach Jeremy Duncan said Wiegersma's effort was pleasing considering she was in the middle of a heavy training workload.

The training will taper off for Wiegersma when she gets closer to the New Zealand Commonwealth Games selection trials in Auckland next month, where she will attempt to qualify for the Games in India in both the 200m and 400m medley events.

Another Southland standout at the Auckland championships was Lisa Pankhurst, who broke the Southland 100m freestyle record in a powerful swim.

She also finished third in a top-quality field in the 200m freestyle event, narrowly missing out on another Southland record.

Southland's Richard Harris and Michael Finlay also performed well, with Harris finishing second in the 100m backstroke and Finlay making finals and swimming plenty of personal bests.
