Gore High School year 12 student Hamish Cooke has been named the Southland cricketer of the 2009-10 season.

The Waikaka teenager was revealed as this year's recipient of the major prize at the Southland Cricket Association awards evening on Saturday.

Cooke has been outstanding this summer, making an immense impression in his debut season in the Southland senior club competition.

The all-rounder led the way with the ball for his club Metropolitan, taking 26 wickets in the one-day competition with an average of just 14.5. Cooke was also sound with the bat, scoring 229 runs at a handy average of 28.62. He was also selected in the Otago under-17 team this year and has been part of the 2009-10 Southland Hawke Cup squad.

While Cooke hasn't yet played at Hawke Cup level, if he gets more results at club level similar those he has achieved this year, he should get his debut in the 2010-11 season.

Bowler Craig Smith was named Hawke Cup player of the year as a result of some good bowling displays in the three Southland games.

Smith was new to the Southland setup this year after he moved to Invercargill to take up a job at Southland Boys' High School.

Well-performed Sarah Osborne was named the Southland women's cricketer of the year.
