Rugby
Gore High School went one better than last year to win the South Island co-ed under-15 rugby tournament in Nelson.

After losing 8-5 to St Andrews in last year's final, Gore High earned some revenge with a 13-nil win over the same team in this year's final to finish the tournament without having had a point scored against it.

Three players were named in the tournament team including Tyler Koning, Morgan Mitchell and Hamish Cook, although Cook will have some painful memories of the final after dislocating his wrist early in the second half.

In the division two section of the co-ed tournament, Central Southland beat James Hargest College 22-5 in the final. Central Southland's Ben Preston was named most valuable player for the tournament.

The Gore-based school is unbeaten going into today's semi-final, after beating Christchurch Girls' 32-27, then beating Craighead 36-33.

The latter match was a nail-biter, with the scores even going into the final quarter, but St Peter's wasn't about to let Craighead keep it out of the top four as it had done for the last couple of years, and pulled through for a win.

St Peter's will play St Kevin's College in their semi-final today.

Last year's South Island and national champion, Verdon College, was ousted from the top four by just one goal.

Verdon cruised to a 41-22 win over Geraldine High School and it's next game — a physical encounter against St Kevin's College — could have gone either way.

A questionable call saw St Kevin's take the honours 27-26 and eliminate Verdon from the top four and from a place in the nationals for the first time in years.

Verdon, which included four players in year 10 or younger, will play off for fifth place today.
