Tournament week continued for many southern schools yesterday and many sports wrapped up their week with finals. Southland schools were in action and several are coming home with wins.

Rugby
Southland Boys' High School won the South Island under 15 tournament in Dunedin, beating Shirley Boys' in the final 13-nil.

Southland Boys' was up 6-nil at halftime, courtesy of two penalties from Jackson Wallace and its defence was outstanding against the strength of some big Shirley Boys' players.

A second-half try to Billy Soper was converted by Wallace and the game was sealed, giving Southland Boys' their second consecutive tournament title.

Golf
Gore High School's Vaughan McCall finished the Youthtown New Zealand secondary schools golf tournament tied as the leading individual after shooting a six-over 146. McCall shot 72 in his first round to be in fourth place going into the second round and shot 74 in the afternoon to share the honours with Ashburton College's Mark O'Malley.

New Plymouth Boys' High School won the Wellington-hosted tournament, and Gore High finished eighth out of 14 teams.

Netball
St Peter's College missed a place in the final of the South Island secondary schools tournament in Dunedin by two goals, losing to St Kevin's 34-36 and placed fourth overall after losing 32-34 to Motueka yesterday afternoon.

Both games were tough, rugged contests and in the semi-final against St Kevin's, St Peter's was narrowly up going into the final quarter. However, it just couldn't hold the lead and a vital call went against it, opening the door to the final for St Kevin's.

Two St Peter's players were named in the talented players squad — Ashleigh Smith and Bridget Chamberlain.

Verdon finished sixth, after beating Craighead Diocesan 34-32, then losing 19-39 to Rangi Ruru.

Villa Maria College won the final, beating St Kevin's 39-28. Gore High was second in the B grade.

Ice hockey
Wakatipu High School won the South Island ice hockey tournament in Dunedin, beating St Andrew's in the final 2-nil.

Wakatipu cruised into yesterday's semi-finals, then beat Christchurch Boys' 7-3 to gain a place in the final. Up by one goal until the final moments in what was a tense game against St Andrew's, Wakatipu scored to seal the deal and take home the overall trophy.

Gore High School lost its quarter-final against Christchurch Boys' 2-7, but won its playoff for fifth place against Kings High School 4-1.

Football
James Hargest College finished fourth in the Linwood Cup boys football tournament at O'Rorke Park, near Invercargill.

The Invercargill school lost 4-1 in the playoff for third against Mountainview.

Wakatipu High School finished sixth after losing 4-3 on penalties to Waitaki, Verdon College finished ninth, beating Opihi 3-1, and St Peter's College finished 12th losing 4-3 on penalties to South Otago.

Final placings: Rangiora 1, St Thomas 2, Mountainview 3, James Hargest 4, Waitaki Boys' 5, Wakatipu 6, Edgewater 7, Ashburton 8, Verdon 9, Opihi 10, South Otago High 11, St Peter's 12.

James Hargest also finished top of the Southland schools at the South Island schoolgirls satellite tournament in Balclutha yesterday, finishing fourth overall after losing to 1-2 to St Andrews.

Central Southland College finished sixth after losing 1-5 to Papanui and Southland Girls' High School finished eighth, losing to Craighead nil-1.

Hockey
Verdon College will play for fifth place today In the Coaches Cup boys tournament in Greymouth after beating St Kevin's College 4-1.

St Peter's College will play for ninth place, after beating Darfield High 4-2 yesterday.

In the Marie Fry girls tournament, Gore High lost 2-3 to Villa Maria College and will play for 11th place today, while Southland Girls' High School is into the finals of its tournament after beating the Gore High second 11 2-nil. Annabel Tayles and Stephanie Roughan scored in the second half. The final is to be played in Feilding today.

In the Johnson Cup boys hockey competition in Invercargill, James Hargest College beat Waitaki Boys 3-1 and it will play off for fifth place today. Southland Boys' High School beat Timaru Boys' 3-nil, and was to face Gore High last night to determine who would play for ninth place.

Basketball
Fiordland College finished sixth in the New Zealand boys basketball qualifying tournament in Timaru.

Fiordland lost 47-84 to Cromwell yesterday, which put Cromwell in fifth place.
