Impressive scores were posted when the Classic Hits Southland Wide League kicked off in Gore tonight.
Ex-High proved a dominant force, scorching to a 67-35 win over Southland Girls' High School while the Northern Tavern St Mary's Men's team accounted for Verdon 68-46. Rata earned a solid 55-44 win over Northern Tavern St Marys.
Debutants in the league, the Southland U-17 emerged victorious from a tight encounter with the defending champion United outfit, who have this year opted for a roster which features a blend of youth and experience.
Brimming with the netball's future stars, the U-17s put in a credible performance to narrowly win the tussle 45-41.
Netball Southland regional manager Rosie De Goldi said teams were excited to take the court for the 2012 edition of the competition.
"This is our premier league so we expect some great encounters which will no doubt get even more exciting as the season progresses," she said.
Round two of the seven-week round robin phase of the league will be staged at the Gore Multisport Centre next Thursday.
