The Southland under-15 girls' team picked up their first win of the national tournament against traditional rivals Otago yesterday.

Southland ran out 3-1 victors, with Emma Hopcroft scoring two goals and Anna Maslin also getting her name on the scoresheet.

Southland have been unlucky at the tournament.

They suffered close losses to Manawatu and North Harbour in group play.

They take on Northland today and hope to finish as high as ninth over the final two days of the tournament.

The Southland under-15 boys' team also had a memorable game yesterday, beating Wellington 1-0 at their tournament in Napier.

Ben Holland struck the game-winner for Southland, with just five minutes left on the clock.

It was Southland's second win of the tournament, after beating Hawke's Bay 3-2 in group play.

Southland narrowly missed out on a place in the top eight after one-goal losses to Canterbury and Waikato.

Southland have a rest day today before playing their final tournament game against Central Otago tomorrow.
