Southland Times sports reporter Brendon Egan has been named a double finalist in the Sir Terry McLean Sports Journalism awards.
Egan is a finalist in the print sports feature category and the Sir John Wells sports journalism scholarship, a prize that allows two young journalists the opportunity to meet key sports leaders and gain a wider understanding of sports governance in New Zealand.
Former Southland Times chief photographer Peter Meecham is a finalist in the best single photo category.
Egan's entry in the feature section included pieces on Southland All Black Jimmy Cowan, Youth Olympic gold medallist Aaron Barclay and Sharks basketball star Kevin Braswell's difficult upbringing on the mean streets of Baltimore.
It's been a good year for Egan, who also claimed the Bell Journalism prize, a travel scholarship open to all young journalists working in the Southland and Otago regions.
