November is a huge month for women's golf in Southland and it isn't set to get any quieter.
After the Southland women won the New Zealand Masters Tournament and Robyn Boniface won the Stead Cup last week, Southland's top female players on Monday battled it out for honours in the Champion of Champions, which was played in Winton.
Robyn Boniface continued a fantastic run of titles to be named the Silver Champion of Champions, narrowly ahead of Angela Gerken.
Anita Fraser (Riverton) was the NettAgg winner and her fellow club member Vera Kerr was named the Bronze Champion of Champions, as well as the NettAgg winner in that category.
The Invercargill team of Angela Gerken, Heather Mitchell and Pam Cracknell won the Gross Stableford Rosebowl and their score of 99 will be sent to New Zealand Golf, which will then determine national winners.
On Sunday the Southland women's team will head to St Clair Golf Course to play against Otago. The team includes Robyn Pullar, Angela Gerken, Olivia Frost, Kerry Mariu, Fiona Murray, Bronwyn O'Brien, Anne Osment and Helen Baird.
For five of the team members - Pullar, Gerken, Frost, Mariu and O'Brien - the weekend's play will be valuable practice, because all five have also been named in the Southland team to contest the national interprovincial tournament being played at the same course from December 11 to 15.
Anne Osment is the reserve for that tournament and Robyn Boniface will captain the side.
Mataura continued their run of wins to retain the Laing Shield on Saturday, albeit after facing a strong challenge from Tuatapere.
Mataura eventually won 3 -2 and, with two of Mataura's wins gained on the 17th hole, there were anxious times for a good crowd of supporters from both clubs.
Results were (Mataura names first): W Ross bt P Maloney 2 and 1, P Roberts bt R Knowler 2 and 1, R Clark square N Fowle, B McNoe lost to P Erskine 3 and 2, J Williams bt W Laurie 6 and 5, M Borthwick lost to C Flynn 3 and 2.
The Fisher Windows Four Ball Aggregate Stableford Trophy for teams of two will be played at Te Anau Golf Club on Saturday, December 1, with a 12.30pm tee-off.
