Two Southland teams unbeaten in first junior rep tournament
Mixtures of results were played out in Mosgiel on Sunday as the Southland junior representative touch season began.
The tournament featured 29 touch teams from Southland, Otago, South Otago and Taieri.
Highlights for Southland included the under-11 and 13 boys' teams going through the tournament unbeaten.
A return leg will take place with the same teams this Sunday at the Gore showgrounds.
These two tournaments play their part in giving teams valuable game time before they head to the South Island Championships in Christchurch in mid-December.
With Southland winning the provincial title for overall performance across all grades in 2011, version 2012 will be looking to replicate last year's success.
Southland will have 12 junior representative teams this year, from under-11 through to under-17 level.
Touch Southland also recently selected under-11 and 13 boys teams from Queenstown to compete in the South Island championships alongside the other 10 teams.
This year has seen the introduction of both boys and girls teams in the under-11 and 13 grades.
In total, the South Island championships will play host to more than 45 teams from Southland to Nelson.
Senior representative preparations are also getting under way this week, with under-19 women and open mixed teams being selected and holding their first training runs.
These teams will compete for national supremacy in Auckland from February 28 to March 2.
