Defeat for Southland in golf champs
Southland have suffered their first defeat at the interprovincial golf championships in Dunedin.
The defending champions have gone down 3-2 to a strong Manawatu/Wanganui lineup at the Balmacewen course.
Scott Hellier put Southland in contention with a 5 and 4 win over Lachie McDonald while Matt Tautari recovered from being all square at the halfway stage to beat Hayden Ring 2 and 1.
That was as good as it got for Southland, with No 1 Tyler McLean losing 1up to Josh Munn in a tightly-contested match, Liam Balneaves going down 4 and 2 to Trent Munn and Jeremy Hall losing 3 and 1 to Junior Tatana.
Despite the loss, Southland is still in contention to finish in the top two of its division and make it through to Saturday's play-offs.
