Southland stars selected for Sydney festival
Southland and Central Otago are well represented in the New Zealand team to contest the Australian Youth Olympic Festival.
A team of 156 junior athletes will represent New Zealand in athletics, three-on-three basketball, badminton, canoe/kayak, cycling, diving, golf, swimming, gymnastics, shooting, triathlon, rowing, weightlifting and wrestling.
Southland will be represented by track cyclist Jeremy Presbury, steeplechase runner Jordan Rackham and rower Kristen Froude.
The Central Otago athletes include track cyclist Liam Aitcheson, canoe/kayakers Jessica Bailey (Wanaka) and Finn Butcher and Marcus Norbury (both Alexandra) and golfer Laura Hoskin (Queenstown).
The youth festival was launched by the Australian Olympic Committee after the success of the Sydney Olympics in 2000. The event was first staged in January 2001.
The festival showcasing future Olympians is held every four years, alternating with the International Olympic Committee's Youth Olympic Games.
The international multisport event runs from January 16 to 20 in Sydney.
