The Southland and Otago Timbersports' annual Christmas circuit gets under way at the Albert Town Tavern in Central Otago from 2pm today.

With many top-ranked axemen from around Australasia competing, there is bound to be plenty of fireworks as the local competitors chop for pride.

The Christmas circuit moves to the Cromwell Town and Country Club tomorrow, before the Gore Town and Country Club on Friday, Otautau's Railway Hotel on Saturday, and the Riverton Sound Shell on Sunday.

On Tuesday, New Year's Day, ethe Tuatapere Axemen Athletic Association will hold its sports day at the Waiau Domain, beginning at 11am.
