New 2.5km challenge in Surf to City
Southlanders with disabilities are being urged to take part in the Surf to City Challenge! 2.5km event.
The event is an extension of a walk held on previous years for children with disabilities.
Sport Southland active lifestyle manager Yvette Hodges said the February 10 event was open to anyone with a disability, regardless of age.
She hoped hundreds of children, adults and caregivers would participate this year.
"It's a challenge we believe most people can do. It's more achievable than the 12k event," she said.
It was also inspiring to see people with disabilities take part in the 12k event, she said. Her sister, Anita McKenzie, had previously competed in the Surf to City and urged other people with disabilities to take part in the new event.
"This event is fantastic because it allows people with disabilities to join in with the rest of the community," Ms McKenzie said.
The event starts in Bond St and joins with participants completing the 12k event in Spey St.
The event is free to enter because sponsor Challenge! Fuel is picking up the entry fee. From every entry, $1 will go to the Heart Foundation and another $1 per entry to Athletics Southland.
Entries would be taken at Sport Southland and must be in before February 8.
