Former first-class player Craig Smith will make a welcome return to the Southland team for the southern zone Hawke Cup cricket showdown with North Otago in Invercargill this weekend.

Smith has spent time overseas, which has ruled him out of the early stages of the season, but played his first game of club cricket last Saturday for Southland Boys' High School and also played in the Southland XI team that played visiting Indian team the New Delhi Players Club in a one-day game on Sunday.

Smith's return will bolster the bowling stocks this weekend while Hamish O'Brien will also return after missing Southland's last Hawke Cup fixture against South Canterbury in Timaru.

O'Brien has been busy of late playing for Otago in the national under-19 tournament and has also been included in an Otago A team to which is playing Tasmania in Dunedin this week.

Smith and O'Brien replace James Wadworth and Steve Waddell in the 12 which had a first innings win over South Canterbury.

Southland: Jason Domigan (c) (Invercargill-Old Boys), Mark Beer (Metro Tigers), Hamish Cooke (Metro Tigers), Ryan Duffy (Metro Tigers), Shaun Fitzgibbon (Marist), Michael Grattan (Albion), Jonathan Hodson (Invercargill-Old Boys), Ryan Meyer (Invercargill-Old Boys), Hamish O'Brien (Metro Tigers), Rhuebyn Prattley (Albion), Craig Smith (SBHS), Simon Wadworth (Invercargill-Old Boys).
